Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) was introduced across the European Union to raise standards and improve safety. All professional bus and coach drivers (Cat D1, D1E, D, DE) and drivers of Lorries of 3.5 tons and upwards (Cat C1, C1E, C, CE) must hold a Driver CPC in order to drive professionally.
Affected drivers will need to complete 35 hours of JAUPT-approved training every 5 years starting on September 10th 2008 for bus and coach drivers and September 10th 2009 for lorry drivers. With a minimum training course length of 7 hours, this means 5 training courses every 5 years.
Those who held licences on the date of introduction were granted acquired rights (‘Grandfather Rights’) up until 9th September 2013 for bus and coach drivers and 9th September 2014 for lorry drivers. Drivers wishing to continue driving for a living after these dates will need to have completed 35 hours of JAUPT-approved Periodic Training.
