MOT Tester Training

Norfolk Training Services has been approved by the IMI to deliver MOT Tester training and assessments.

IMI Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (classes 4 and 7)

If you wish to become an MOT tester, this qualification is required. To be eligible to undertake this qualification in order to be an MOT Tester, a learner must:

  • have a current and full UK driving licence for the vehicle classes they want to test
  • be a skilled mechanic with at least 4 years’
  • full-time employment in the service and repair of the vehicle types to be tested. (Apprentices who have been employed for 4 years are eligible)
  • have no unspent convictions for criminal offences connected with the MOT testing scheme or the motor trade, or involving acts of violence or intimidation
  • be ‘of good repute’

and to become a nominated tester (NT) for class 3, 4, 5 or 7 vehicles you must also have an ‘appropriate’ qualification.

Achievement of this qualification will enable you to apply to undertake the DVSA final observed assessment in order to achieve your Certificate of Competence (CoC), enabling you to become a Nominated Tester.

What will you study as part of this qualification?

The content of this qualification has been designed to reflect the contents of the National Occupational Standards for MOT Testers. It is based on the suite of NOS developed by the IMI in conjunction with DVSA and
the MOT industry in 2015.The content of the qualification includes:

  • working safely within a vehicle test centre
  • communicating with colleagues and customers
  • how to manage and maintain their CPD
  • carrying out pre-test checks
  • carrying out an MOT test

The size of the qualifications is 29 guided learning hours (GLH), of which a minimum of 8 hours must be practical.

Course Duration

The course is delivered over 4 days with assessment on the 5th day usually commencing on Monday with assessment on Friday. Training starts each day at 09.00 and finishes on days 1 – 3 at 16.30 and on day 4 at 17.00. with an hour for lunch each day. Assessments commence at 09.00 on day 5.

Attendee Numbers

The number of attendees per course is limited to 6*.

Content

The content of these qualifications has been designed to cover the requirements for all prospective Nominated Testers.

External Assessment

These qualifications are subject to externally set and externally marked assessment in the form of online tests delivered through the IMI online testing platform. IMI has developed a bank of questions that will be randomly selected to cover the knowledge requirements of the qualification. This test will consist of 40 questions, to be answered in 75 minutes and will span the breadth of the content for each of the units.

Internal Assessment

In addition to the externally-set and externally-marked online tests, learners must successfully undertake practical assessments provided by IMI.
